Geothermal energy is one of the cleanest sources of renewable energy that harnesses the natural heat of the Earth. This energy can be used for generating electricity and providing direct heat for numerous applications such as space heating, water heating, aquaculture, industrial process heat and water desalination. According to the International Energy Agency at the end of 2009, world geothermal energy installed capacity was 11,000 MW for electricity generation and 5 times that for direct use of heat. Forecasts for 2050 presented at the World Geothermal Congress 2010 indicate a possible increase of geothermal direct use of almost 20 times that of current levels.

Geothermal Systems

There are three different ways that power plants process geothermal energy: dry stream, flash stream and binary-cycle. All three methods use Carno-cycle turbines, which drive generators that produce electricity.
